Clew is one such free downloadable software. It is basically a chart plotting course or program. The clew is operational with any GPS that has NMEA output. You may connect a GPS to your very own laptop, while you travel on water or road and load maps that have been scanned or map photos that are fed into your laptop/PC. Technical experts still feel clew is not much appropriate for navigational purposes.
How to Use:
Firstly you have to clean the subdirectory by deleting all the old picture images or you might also move them to another directory. Then run the clew in a visual display unit. You need to open out the track directory and use the full-screen mode by utilizing appropriate key functions to scour the map images.

Clew program may also be used to replay logs, in real-time and for new maps. Using the GPS manager, clew could play downloaded tracks from GPS units.

The new clew CVS version may assist in playing back explorist trails or tracks.

The new Clew version supports two map formats-GPSy and Native Clew.

The Native Clew edition maps are mostly in .jpg or .png image file formats. While the GPSy maps requires the .jpg or the .jpg calibrated file format.
Some Troubleshooting Details:

Sometimes the connection from USB to serial is not recognized by the program. In such cases, you may have to disconnect the converter from the computer and also from the GPS, then connect it to the PC in the first place and then also plug in the GPS after that. Take care that the GPS is not connected prior to the computer connectivity.

There is a bug fixed in the new version of clew program, and sometimes a Name error may occur, which may be corrected with an additional level of indentation.
