If you are using Google Android system (mobile operating system) and looking for free / opensource GPS software for android platform, then this post is something that might be of interest to you. I’m posting here a list of more than twenty Free Android GPS applications.

Google Android Application

LifeAware: LifeAware gives you the ability to create your own network of friends and family members and locate them. Unlike other location services, LifeAware will provide you with their last known location, providing insight even if their phone is off or out of range. Locate family or friends from your phone or the LifeAware website, and setup zones to trigger alerts when they enter or leave them.

iMap Weather: iMap Weather from Weather Decision Technologies Mobile” is a location-based handheld weather application and a “Top 50″ Google Android Developer Award winner. The application allows for pinpoint forecasts and high resolution radar and provides exclusive “Follow Me” weather for mobile users.

iSafe: FreeFamilyWatch (FFW) provides compelling and free-to-all location-based services for your GPS mobile device, helping everyone to navigate through safety. It is a personal safety mobile Android application.

Locale: Dynamically manages your phone’s settings based on conditions, such as location. With Locale, you create situations specifying conditions under which your phone’s settings should change. For example, your “At School” situation notices when your location condition is “77 Mass Ave,” and changes your ringer volume setting to vibrate.

    ShopSavvy is a shopping assistant with which users can scan the bar code of any product using their phone’s built-in camera, then find the best prices online and in local stores.

    SportyPal is for running and cycling – log and map your tracks and results on the web, analyze afterwards or share with your friends.

    My Tracks: This Android application enables you to record GPS tracks and view live statistics – such as time, speed, distance, and elevation – while hiking, biking, running or participating in other outdoor activities. Once recorded, you can share your tracks, upload them to Google Spreadsheets and visualize them on Google My Maps.

      Wow, this was a really excellent post. In hypothesis I’d like to compose like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a lot and never seem to get something done.

      I am in a bit of pickle, I have had my Apple iPhone 3G for the past 2 years and it’s been good. It’s my understanding that Apple has a new update coming out called OS 4 and it’s supposed to be adding some new bells & whistles to the iPhone 3G. The problem is that I bought Verizon’s new HTC Incredible the HTC Incredible and it is an incredible phone, way better than the Apple iphone, BUT I’m hearing that Apple is going to be coming out with a brand iphone altogether, and it’s supposed to be really nice but no one has any ideas as to when and Apple isn’t saying a thing. Should I keep my HTC Incredible, that I have a month to test and return if I don’t want to keep it, or should I return it, keep my current iPhone 3G and wait for the release for the new iPhone- tough to to choose.
