GPS Basics | | April 13, 2010 at 6:22 pm

GPS NavigationGPS Navigation stands for determining the position and direction on the surface of the earth. GPS has wide applications and while you travel on the earth your position and direction can be tracked with the use of a GPS receiver.

How to Use Navigational Information?

If your GPS receiver is a non mapped one, the information will be available on a LCD screen. With the help of a computer program, the information received by a GPS receiver is converted into dots on the screen to enable you to determine the position and direction. In fact, the route that you had followed will also appear on the screen. You can also find out where you are heading, by projecting your direction over a longer distance.

These days, with the help of mapped receivers, one can locate the region where one is and where one wants to go. However, mapped or no-mapped, the navigational aspect of GPS can at least ensure that you are not moving around in circles. In emergency situations, where one is lost in a hilly area while trekking or while sailing on a boat, one can safely find out the route from where one came from.

Navigational Applications

Following users can benefit from navigational information provided by a GPS

  • Hikers: The hikers are one set of people who can benefit from navigational information to a great extent. They can identify landmarks or important locations such as a road or a building with the help of mapped receivers. GPS can also help to point out their location in the trail.
  • Boat Owners: They can also benefit from navigational information especially when in emergency like losing the way or a person falling overboard.
  • Commercial Flights: Passengers are allowed to use and carry GPS equipments to let hem keep a tab on their movements over the land.
  • Others: Whether one is traveling by sea, on land or by air, GPS can be a great help to keep a check whether one is going in the right direction or not.

Types of Navigational GPS Receivers

There are various types of GPS receivers in the market that enable navigation. One of them is the dedicated GPS receiver, which can output GPS related information in sentences. One can also use them to do blank map GPS navigation. Other popular receivers are GPS Mice, a receiver without a user-interface and Bluetooth GPS receivers, a receiver which can connect to pocket PC without a cable.

Whether one is in a bad weather condition or on a rough terrain, these receivers can be relied upon and used as a perfect option whenever one is in emergency.

The technology has opened its arms – you only have to take the first step!
